Why nanowrimo?

nanowrimo is national novel writing month. The idea is that during November you write a 50,000 word novel – 50,000 words in 30 days. The aim is quantity over quality. What’s the point? The point is that the only way to improve writing is to write lots and lots, overcoming the internal editor.
I’ve done it twice, and done absolutely nothing with the end results. Still I remember fondly the feeling when writing flows, that moment when the characters take over and start telling me what to write. It’s like a drug, that high, and so again this year I’ll be churning out page after page of pointless drivel, in an attempt to push through to something worthwhile.
